Blog Table: Favorite Cartoon(s) Growing Up

Vanessa M

I was a very offbeat child with offbeat tastes. Pee Wee’s Playhouse. Ren&Stimpy. I enjoyed anything slightly unsettling and a little grotesque. Cartoon Network was good for that.  I stayed up late every friday night-and EVERY night in the summer to watch Space Ghost Coast to Coast. But I think out of total hours spent and laughs measured in gallons of tears, the winner would have to be Dexter’s Lab.
Private TheoryEasily Tom & Jerry… The only cartoon growing up that would make me laugh without even trying. The battles between two characters who couldn’t speak but only gesture and react held my attention like none other. Of course I became a Looney Toons Fan and Animaniacs as I grew older but the essence of my childhood revolved around cartoon network on the old cable box Channel 44 in STP. Scooby Doo’s, Flinstones, Jetsons and my ninja Tom & Jerry.

Yeah, son. 24B in Mpls. I got babysat by Cartoon Network from 5 on up (Don’t judge my ma. I was an extremely mature kid). I used to have these tapes with like 50+ hours of cartoons on them — all the old Looney Toon jawns. Those are my favorite by far. But if you threw on some Tom & Jerry, some Hong Kong Phooey, Jabber Jaw, Speed Buggy, Josie and the Pussy Cats, Scooby Doo, The Jetsons, The Flintstones, or anything like it — I was a happy kid. That being said, once I got introduced to Dragon Ball Z . . . my life was forever changed.

What you mean growing up? I’ll save my love of Naruto for another table. When I was a kind, Doug taught me how to be the ultimate success story, getting his girl while wearing the same thing everyday. Sailor Moon and DBZ had me on ten at recess. Hey Arnold was amazing if only for Jerald’s fro. AHHHHHH! Real Monsters was the jam and a half, and who can forget about Pokemon. All Day. Caught them all. By myself. One Pokedex. No masterballs. No potions. No Rare candies. Only me. And my Squirtle. And my Jigglypuff. You read for me to use rest, NGH! You ready for Rest! Honorable Mentions: Lil Bill, Rugrats, Recess, Pepper Ann, X-Men, X-Men Evolution (there is a difference!).
