We Need Mending Part II: Injustice

We Need Mending Part II: Injustice

Much like my first “We Need Mending” post, this too was inspired by a video I watched recently — two rather, both by TED speakers (if you’re unfamiliar with TED, it’s definitely a site worth checking out, but I’ll speak more on that in a future post). Each video, one by Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative and the other by Novelist Isabel Allende, centered around justice.

Well.

The overall LACK of justice not only withing America, but around the world. I recommend watching the both of them. They’re kind of lengthy — it’s probably take about 45 minutes — but trust me. It will be 45 minutes well spent:

—————————————————————————————–
These two videos struck so many chords within me. They were singing my song, humming my tune. Swear I almost let a couple “amen’s” slip out, but I was at work so I couldn’t go too ham.
If you didn’t watched the video’s, I’ll summarize:
OUR WORLD’S FUCKED UP.
That was pretty much the jist.
Now, naturally, you get my two cents.
But I’m not really concerned about the world (in this post).  I’m not going to address the grocery list of problems we have as a global community — I’d be here until 2015 writing that shit.
Instead, I’d like to talk about what’s happening in our own backyard: America.
Look around.
What do you see?
Is it the America you thought we’d have by 2012? Is it the future our ancestors dreamed about? Well, in many ways. Yes. But not in any of the ways that matter.
Sure. We just saw a fucking holographic Tupac rip the stage at Coachella.
Cool. We live in an age where information — literally anything we want to know — is at our fingertips every second of every day.
Technology is MOVING.
Yet — I’d argue that our nation is regressing — I’ll take that claim even further and argue that if change doesn’t happen, and happen fast, we’ll continue to move closer and closer toward a dystopian society — extreme, yes, but think about it.
We’re seeing with our own eyes, the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. The repercussions of the gap widening is evermore apparent with each year that passes.
People are jobless — educated people at that. Families are homeless. Tuition is skyrocketing.  By 2020 1/5 of our nation’s jobs will require a Bachelor’s Degree. Our tax dollar’s AREN’T being used on the overall betterment of our society. Programs are being cut. Entire corporations are collapsing.
And who suffers?
The 99%. The little people. You. Me. The got damn majority.
How is it that we’ve let it come this far? Where are our voices? Where is our leadership?
More importantly, where is our heart?
We’re just as divided as ever. We have no identity. No cultural values. No community.
As Bryan Stevenson alluded to, America has a bad habit of sweeping its history under the rug as opposed to addressing it. A soulless form, littered with wounds — yet we live each day like everything’s okay.
Like the shit can’t be changed.
The time is now.
We must heal before we can even dream of moving forward as a nation. Everybody wanted to lose their minds over Trayvon Martin. It was the most unified effort I’d seen in our country since Jena 6. But why does it take a “hate” crime to get a riled up? We’re dying everyday. We’re getting put in jail everyday. Why no march then? No signs. No Facebook petition. Nothing.
Wake up.
Injustice is around every corner. It’s robbing to put food on the table. It’s selling women and children like ipods. It’s cancelling after school programs. It’s getting locked up without sufficient evidence. It’s stopping you for fitting the profile. It’s laying off your mom, your dad, you. It’s fracturing its spouses ribs. It’s breaking hearts. Shattering spirits. Running a fucking mok.
Wake up.
Put down that Ps3 controller. Ash that blunt. Put down that bottle. Turn off the TV. Log off twitter and Facebook. FUCK the Kardashians, Real House Wives, Pawnstars, Kanye, Brad and Angelina, Will Smith and Jada. Fuck all that shit.
Wake up.
Open your eyes to the what’s happening in the world around you.
The time is now.

This shit was all over the place. Much like the last one. I’m pretty sure I got my point across, though.
Later days,
